Top 5 Cars Featured In Theatre (In Honour of the Stratford and Shaw Festival

Most people do not associate cars with theatre. In fact, they are often considered two totally different areas of interest. Car lovers tend to be more interested in going to auto shows, races, and watching repair shows on televisions, whereas theatre buffs tends to be more about intricate stories that are acted out in front of live audiences.
But every once in a while two completely different and seemingly unrelated interests come together in a unique way in the theatre community. Cars and theatre are no different.
Upon first thought, cars and theatre are not topics that come to mind, even though they do cross paths. But with the emergence of a new theatre and their willingness to bring new concepts to the stage, using cars as a way to tell a story or as a stage prop is not out of the question.
In honour of the Stratford and Shaw Festival that occur annually in Ontario, the following will take a look at cars that have been features in theatre over the years:
Grease: I think it is safe to say that everyone remembers the car scenes in Grease. One of the most famous musicals of all time, it features a number of classic cars such as the Buick Special and Dodge Coronet (although they were more prominently featured in the film).

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: This is one of the most famous cars used in film and theatre. Believe it or not, they actually built six version of the car for the film and built a new version of the car in 2002 for British stage production and it is still considered the most expensive stage props ever used in theatre.

Car Talk - The Musical: Inspired by the National Public Radio Show, is considered one of the best automotive based musicals. It̢۪s the perfect theatre option for the car lover in your life.

Driving Miss Daisy: This play revolves around a car. The story is based on the relationship between a women and her chauffeur and featured a Hudson and then later on featured Cadillacs.

The Blues Brothers: The Blues Brothers, which has recently been adapted as a theatrical release makes this list simply because it features the Blues mobile. The Blues mobile, which is a 1974 Dodge Monaco sedan, is featured in this story in a series of famous chase scenes.

While the theatre and vehicles do not seem like the most natural of matches, they definitely work in these instances. Going forward, with the emergence of new theatre and their willingness to try new and exciting projects, it is likely that we will see more and more plays and musicals that feature vehicles as a major part of the storyline.
Who knows; we may even see Fast and the Furious the musical? What about Gone in 60 Seconds the musical? Or, perhapsCars the musical? Well, maybe not, but one thing is for sure, when done right, vehicles can play a large role in the theatre community.
